The National Council of Young Israel appealed today to Gov. Rockefeller for corrective legislation to end "the continuing and damaging discrimination against a particular group of Americans resulting from New York’s antiquated Sunday closing law."
The Orthodox group asked the Governor to call an immediate special session of the legislature "to consider corrective measures" because "hundreds of small merchants" were "the victims of this discriminatory law by reason of the fact that they observe Saturday as a day of rest, in keeping with their recognized rights of religious belief."
The telegram to the Governor cited the recent crackdowns by police on merchants in some sections of New York City for sales on Sunday. Many of those receiving summonses have been Jewish merchants.
