A Young Israel synagogue in Queens was the target of a rock-throwing attack which smashed 19 plate glass windows in what an official said today was the sixth attack on the building in the past few months. Police promised an around-the-clock guard but were not on duty this afternoon. A spokesman for Young Israel of the Rockaways Temple said such protection was promised after the incident was discovered yesterday and that the police guard was expected.
Norman Schwartz, house committee chairman, said no one was in the synagogue yesterday afternoon when he arrived and found rocks and glass “all over the place.” He said that last week he and Rabbi H. P. Solnica found swastikas painted on walls of the synagogue. A day later, he said, a group of white youths shouted at Rabbi Solnica, as he was walking to the synagogue, “We’re going to finish off what Hitler didn’t do.” The rabbi said he was unable to identify any of the youths. Windows have been broken and the sanctuary entered, and money was stolen in previous vandalism incidents, he said. Mr. Schwartz said that “we never bother anybody around here but some group is out to get us.”
