Major Robert Mr. Neiman, 25, of the Marine Corps, has been awarded the Navy Cross, Bronze Star and Legion of Merit for heroism in the South Pacific, the Jewish Welfare Bcard reports today.
While leading his company in an attack against prepared gun positions and fortifications on Saipan, his command tank was crippled by fire from a large caliber gun. Major Neiman left that tank and went on leading the attack from a second one. That tank, too, was put out of action–by a land mine. Neiman evacuated the tank under heavy fire and continued to direct his company from a third tank. He organized his command and penetrated well entrenched enemy positions. During the attack he destroyed several machine gun and mortar positions and inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy.
