Revelatory of the present state of the once highly prosperous Jewish community of Vienna is a tentative appropriation of 2,500,000 schillings in the preliminary budget of the community organization for the coming year for social relief purposes. The relief appropriation is the largest single item in the organization’s budget of 6,500,000 schillings. It has been made necessary by the growing impoverishment of the Jews in Vienna, partly by reason of general economic conditions and largely as a result of the discriminatory decrees virtually barring Jews from public office and the professions and restricting their activities in trade, commerce and the crafts.
Other items on the budget include 600,000 schillings for education. Part of this sum will be used for teaching the Hebrew language to Vienna Jewish youths, many of whom are desirous of emigrating to Palestine because of the dark outlook for the future here. Allocation of funds for teaching Hebrew here is a significant sign of the present state of the Jews of Austria.
