Louis Zahne will desert Dr. Hubert Schnuch, The Jewish Daily Bulletin learned Friday night.
Zahne’s repudiation of Schnuch, who is fighting what appears to be a losing battle to retain national leadership of the Nazi League of Friends of New Germany, will constitute the most stunning blow yet dealt the Schnuch-Kappe-Gissibl camp.
Dr. Ignatz T. Griebl, notorious in German-American circles as a disturbing influence in the welloiled machinery of other organizations, has been the heretofore hidden force behind the fight between the camps of Dr. Schnuch and Anton Haegele, leader of rebellious Nazis in Manhattan and the Bronx, The Bulletin further learned.
Dr. Griebl, it was disclosed, has maintained a tactical position in the background of the clash, but at the same time has indirectly prodded Haegele and his lieutenants to an increasing display of enmity against the opposing ranks.
It was at Griebl’s advice that Zahne left New York on what Haegele henchmen described as a “political vacation.” Zahne was expected to return to this city to spend Christmas with his family. He probably will return to his secret place of “convalescence,” somewhere in southern Pennsylvania, after the holidays.
Formerly one of Schnuch’s most outspoken supporters, Zahne will announce his withdrawal from all activities connected with the League on or about January 20, a Bulletin reporter learned.
