The Jewish people have the same right to self-determination as the Palestinians, and that is what Zionism is all about, Israeli Ambassador Hadassa Ben-Itto declared yesterday during the debate on self-determination and human rights in the General Assembly’s Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee (Third Committee). Ben-Itto spoke in the exercise of her right of reply to charges by Arab delegates that Zionism denied the rights of the Palestinians to self-determination.
She said she was proud to be a Zionist and grateful that 40 years ago her parents were Zionists and came to Israel, otherwise she would have perished like all of her other relatives in the Warsaw Ghetto or the ovens of Auschwitz Ben-Itto quoted Israeli Foreign Minister Yigal Allon’s recent speech to the General Assembly in which he said that Israel was aware of the problem of the Palestinians and sought a fair and constructive solution for that problem.
