The result of the Zionist elections in Austria caused a bitter controversy between the administration and the Robert Stricker group, turning the entire affair into a scandal which attracted wide attention in the Austrian press.
The demand that new elections be held was voiced and a campaign of slander and vilification, participated in by both parties, ensued. Robert Stricker published in his organ. “Neue Welt,” a demand that the administratration resign and turn over “the power” to the Congress electors. The administration retaliated by charging the Radical Zionist group with employing unfair and fraudulent methods. It is asserted that the Radical Zionist group distributed Shekalim free of charge and brought to the polls many non-Jews and confessionslose (those registered under Austrian law as unaffiliated with any religion). Christian servant girls were said to be among those who cast votes for the Radical Zionist ticket.
