Under the pall cast yesterday by the funeral in Tel Aviv of Chaim Nachman Bialik, Hebrew poet laureate who died in Vienna on July 4, American Zionists took a long step toward Zionist unity and an end to factionalism when representatives of the Zionist Organization of America, Mizrachi, Laborites and Revisionists, joined in honoring the memory of the dead poet.
Thousands of New York Jews gathered in Carnegie Hall last night and listened to a list of speakers which included Morris Rothenberg, Louis Lipsky, Berl Locker, Joseph Sprinzak, Mrs. Rose W. Halprin, Rabbi Israel Goldstein, Rabbi Jacob Levinson, Elias Ginsburg, Abraham Goldberg, Chaim Greenberg, Professor Nissim Touroff, Menahem Ribalow and Samuel Margoshes pay a final tribute in honor of the dead.
Morris Rothenberg, president of the Zionist Organization of America, who presided at the Bialik memorial meeting, characterized Bialik as “the symbol of Jewish cultural revival.” Speaking of his passing, Mr. Rothenberg declared: “Today in Palestine, Chaim Nachman Bialik, the greatest Hebrew national poet of our time, the foremost Jewish literary figure in the modern Jewish Renaissance, was laid to rest. At the height of his intellectual vigor, and in the fullness of his creative lowers, Bialik has been taken away.
