Zionist leaders warned today against the violation of “Havlagah” — the non-retaliation policy of the Palestine Jews in the face of Arab attacks –while London newspapers saw the continuing violence dimming the hopes for any settlement of the Palestine problem in the near future.
Professor Selig Brodetsky, head of the political department of the Jewish Agency Executive, addressing the Anglo-Palestine Club, warned against the assumption that the outrages against Arabs were committed by Jews, but declared that destruction of the self restraint policy would prove disastrous to the Palestine Jewish community and the Jewish people. Berl Locker, Labor Zionist leader, asserted that throwing “Havlagah” overboard would organize the whole Arab world against the Jews.
The Jerusalem correspondent of The Times declared in a dispatch that Government prestige was declining and feeling between the Arabs and Jews was hardening. As long as the basic political situation is unchanged, the correspondent said, nothing except overwhelming force can pacify the country, and then it would be only repression. The Daily Telegraph declared editorially that no scheme for Palestine administration could be considered practical as long as the passions of the two races manifested themselves in brutal and indiscriminate outrages.
