Sen. Wayne Morse this week-end called the attention of the Senate to a resolution adopted by the Portland, Ore., Zionist Council protesting the State Department decision to grant arms aid to Iraq. The resolution said that “to arm Iraq at a time when Arab-Israel tension has been mounting, and without a firm commitment to make peace with Israel, is to fortify Arab intransigeance and risk a renewal of open hostilities.”
Rep. Roy W. Weir of Minnesota today directed attention to recent remarks by Assistant Secretary of State Henry A. Byroade concerning Israel. Rep. Weir quoted from an editorial in the American Jewish World which compared Mr. Byroade’s “advice” to Israel with the State Department decision to grant arms to Iraq as “a most inept pronouncement.”
