Zionist Underground Activities in Axis Countries Reported at Syracuse Conference

The underground activities of the Zionist Laborite movement in occupied Poland as well as the Zionist work conducted in the Nazi-dominated countries of Rumania and Hungary were outlined today by A. Tartakower, secretary of the World Confederation of Peale Zion, addressing the conference of the Zionist Labor Party of America now taking place here.

Though the Zionist offices have all been closed down in Rumania, there is still a Palestine Office functioning there to advise Jews on emigration to Palestine, Mr. Tartakower reported. Similarly there are still Zionist activities being conducted in Hungary.

Declaring that in Nazi-held Poland the Zionist laborite movement suffers more than the non-Jewish underground movement because its members are confined in ghettos, Mr. Tartakower said that one of the principal tasks of the World Conference of Paolo Zion is to support the Zionist laborite underground movement in Axis-held countries, as well as to maintain the Hechalutz and pioneer training centers in those occupied countries where they still exist. He reported that the Poale Zion movement is very active now in Latin American countries but is illegal in Brazil.

Joseph Schlossborg, American Jewish Labor Leader, addressing the conference, called on American Jewish youth to become more active in American Jewish life and in Zionist activities. He predicted a great wave of anti-Semitism in post-war Europe which, he said, will affect the United States with the aid of “powerful anti-Jewish elements” in this country.
