Mrs. Samuel Cohen received a tribute here this week from friends in all the walks of life on the occasion of her 80th birthday. She has long been active in charitable affairs and has a record of achievements that influenced political leaders and others to attend a testimonial reception in her honor.
She wanted no presents so friends gave a sum of money to the Ladies Hebrew Benevolent Society which will be known as the Zippie Cohen birthday fund.
The Richmond News Leader said in an editorial:
“All those whom Mrs. Cohen has served in the fruitful years will wish to thank her and to congratulate her. She comes rightly to her inheritance of civic conscience. Her maternal grandfather, Meyer Angle, was first reader of Beth Ahabah, and gave not less than six sons to the Confederate Army. Her father, Rev. Max J. Michelbacher, was the first rabbi of that congregation and as all old Richmondites remember, a leader of his people.”
Mrs. Cohen will continue to be active in her social work.
