    Rate this blog:
known as "Jewlicious @ the Beach."

Jewlicious refers to both a blog, Jewlicious.com, and an attitude--hip, sardonic, irreverent and yet undeniably proud and consciously eclectic. The "beach" refers to Beach Hillel, the official Hillel of the Long Beach area and for various Southern California schools. The two organizations first partnered in 2005 for a conference that drew over 100 people. 2006 saw the number more than double. This year's festival drew over 500 people--with at least ten states and 46 colleges and universities represented. 95 percent of participants were under 26; festival presenters covered such topics as Jews in Hollywood and the media, the emergent field of Jewish viral video, the global Jewish community, and our relationship to the environment. Two major concerts featured American Jewish and Israeli music from mysecondsurprise, DJs Soulico Crew, the inimitable Eastern European stylings of Golem, Rav Shmuel & The Bloodsugars, the indie-style missflag, heavy metal Jews The Makkabees and others. There was also contemporary, hip-hop flavored comedy from Smooth E (Eric Schwartz) and energized spoken word from Exodus (Eddie Fox).

The event had a great impact on students. One student from Cal State Fullerton wrote on the Facebook wall after the event [sentence structure maintained for authenticity's sake], "I haven't stopped talking about it since I left. 364 more days till Jewlicious 4.0 baby!!" Another student from CSU Northridge called the gathering "one of the top Shabbatons I've been to." In an article about the conference in J, the Jewish news weekly of Northern California, some students announced plans to include Jewish traditions more frequently in their lives:

[Sonoma State student Cecille] Merrin's favorite activities included two Sabbath rituals. She had her first experience making challah for Shabbat, a tradition she plans to import to Friday night dinners at Sonoma Hillel. She also liked participating in Havdallah on Saturday night, marking the departure of the Sabbath. That sentiment was shared by Sonoma State student Jordan Speizer, 20, a music major from Napa. Speizer also attended for first time, and found that he had deepened friendships with fellow participants. "I don't even know the people from my Hillel that well, so it's been a bonding experience. I've gotten to know them better. I came for that reason ... There was always something that interested me — in the media, in Hollywood, Shabbat in a cynical world. I'm not really that religious, so I like the discussions where you could just talk."

Students are also considering making room in their futures for birthright trips; perhaps even considering some of the trips organized by Jewlicious.com--three of which are slated for this summer.

And on the communal side of it all, one Jewish community leader left the event both energized and frustrated: Jewlicious has taught me what can be. It has changed my expectation of what our Jewish community should be doing for ourselves and for our future. ...I'm finally ready to admit that "the Jewish community" doesn't seem to get it. At all. Yeah, there are lights in the crowd who have made it possible for Jewlicious to grow and thrive. But there is some sort of communal force that seems hell bent on keeping on keeping on, even if that means doing so little for so few...

This is a common frustration that exists for today's Jewish innovators; the old ways asserting that "that's just how it's always been done" vs. the new ways, which can seem scary or threatening. But this communal leader challenges the Jewish community to do with their extensive funding the kind of thing for Jewish youth that Jewlicious and Beach Hillel seem to have achieved with so little.

Why can Beach Hillel, with almost no resources, develop a Web site and blog that is perfect for students, when the Federation with all of their national resources can't seem to build an engaging static Web site? What other members of our community have taken to the power of blogging? [...] I half expect one of our future relatives to come back to what was once Long Beach, stand atop the rubble pile that is left, and tell their children stories about how in this place, now called Tel Jewlicious, inspired great Jewish leaders who went out into the land and prospered as Jews.

[Esther writes for Jewlicious, and has been a part of the programming and planning for the festival since its first year. Last summer, she staffed a Jewlicious birthright trip.]

I got here via Urban Kvetch...so this is where you're hanging out these days :)

JKap's post was most inspiring...and reflected how I've felt about organized Jewish life since I was a kid. Hillel was NOT cool when I was in college, and every time I go to the JCC here in Savannah I want to go into a coma, it's so boring. Viva Jewlicious for fanning a spark that, Baruch Hashem, will fan across the country!!

Now, how to begin a dynamic, exciting Jewish retreat for families with young children??
