U.S. Rep. Tom Lantos implored delegates at AIPAC’s policy conference to lobby members of the Congress to pass a bill he introduced to toughen sanctions against Iran and bar the White House from waiving them.

"I need your help. Please take this assignment as seriously as I do," said Lantos (D-Calif.), who chairs the House Foreign Affairs Committee. He called the bill the "single most important piece of legislation this session of Congress."

More than 5,000 AIPAC activists were expected Tuesday to fan out on Capitol Hill for meetings with their respective members of Congress. Building support for the Lantos bill is one of AIPAC’s top legislative priorities.

Lantos, a Jewish survivor of the Holocaust, said all of Israel’s accomplishments "will not matter" if Iran is allowed to develop nuclear weapons.
