A controversial Arabic-language charter school in New York City has hired an Orthodox Jewish woman as its acting principal.

Danielle Salzberg was appointed this week to replace Debbie Almontaser, the founding principal of the Khalil Gibran International Academy, who was forced to step down after trying to explain away the word "intifada."

Salzburg is a Jewish educator who grew up Orthodox, The Jerusalem Post reported.

On Wednesday, the New York Post reported that Salzburg was once a Zionist who considered moving to Israel.

The school, mired in controversy virtually from the start, is due to open in September.
