Garry Kasparov has dropped his bid for the Presidency of Russia in 2008.

According to Reuters, Kasparov cited difficulty in registering his party as the reason for his decision, a problem he attributed to official obstruction. He announced his decision on Thursday, at a funeral for an opposition leader outside of Moscow.

"We understand that a decision has been made not to allow my registration even at this preliminary stage," said Kasparov.

The former world chess champion, whose father is Jewish, leads the Other Russia opposition coalition, a tiny party combining liberal reformers and far-right groups such as the National Bolsheviks. The groups are united in their opposition to the policies of President Vladimir Putin.

Kasparov has accused Putin of establishing a police state, while the Kremlin says that the Other Russia is a front for Western groups trying to destabilize the country.
