One of every five hate crimes in Ukraine since the start of last year was against the Jewish community, the country's security police reported.

Approximately 100 hate crimes were committed since January 2007, Nikolay Kalashnik, the deputy head of the Ukrainian National Security Service, said last week. Some 20 percent were against the Jewish community.

Kalashnik noted that at the end of last year, the security service formed a special unit to combat racist violence.

Attacks on ethnic minorities are occurring in Ukraine at a record pace, according to the Union of Councils for the Jews in the Former Soviet Union.
