Supreme Court allows Coke lawsuit to proceed

The U.S. Supreme Court declined to consider a request by Coca-Cola to halt an Egyptian Jewish family’s lawsuit alleging that the company was profiting from property illegally seized by Egyptian authorities.  Monday’s decision lets stand an appeals court ruling that allows the lawsuit to proceed, according to The Associated Press. The Bigio family, which now lives in Canada, claims its property was taken by the Egyptian government in 1962 and later leased, via a subsidiary, to Coca-Cola. The company says it doesn’t own the property in question and has moved to try the case in Egypt.  Earlier this month, the Zionist Organization of America called for a boycott against Coca-Cola, which it alleges profited from an anti-Semitic campaign. Jewish refugees from Arab lands recently have stepped up efforts to document the losses they suffered when authorities seized their property in a wave of anti-Jewish actions in the years after the State of Israel was founded.
