Foxman: Ki-moon understands Israel’s plight

Ban Ki-moon discussed the Israeli-Palestinian conflict with Anti-Defamation League officials. At Thursday’s meeting, which came on the heels of the U.N. Secretary-General’s visit to the Middle East, Ban discussed with ADL National Director Abraham Foxman his understanding of Israel’s situation. “The secretary-general demonstrated to us his grasp of Israel’s security concerns, having seen the country and its borders up close,” Foxman said in a release after the meeting at Ban’s office. “He now understands the threats Israel faces from its southern and northern borders, and how Israeli society copes with them.” Ki-moon acknowledged that Israel is treated poorly by the U.N. General Assembly and by the U.N. Human Rights Council, Foxman said. Ki-moon has placed Middle East security atop his lists of priorities as secretary-general, along with the humanitarian crisis in Darfur. He also has called for the prompt return of three Israeli soldiers taken captive by the Palestinians and Hezbollah last summer.
