Brazilian Jews donate coats to charity

Sao Paulo’s Jewish community donated 10,000 winter coats to a government-run campaign.

Representatives from the Sao Paulo State Jewish Federation presented the donation last week to first lady Monica Serra, who heads the annual Coats Campaign in which coats, blankets and pillows are collected and donated to the poor.

Some 200 young Jewish volunteers collected the coats last week in Higienopolis, a neighborhood with a large concentration of Jews. Sixty other drop-off locations were established in Jewish institutions and Jewish-owned establishments.

“This is a duty that the Jewish community has to the society,” federation President Boris Ber said.

“All those who were engaged have given a lesson of sympathy,” Serra added.

Sao Paulo is home to about half of Brazil’s 120,000 Jews.
