European officials talking to Hamas

Western governments generally have been boycotting Hamas, a position supported by Israel. But in recent weeks there have been growing calls in Europe to engage with the group, which the United States and Israel regard as a terrorist organization.
Earlier this month, Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi said Hamas’ existence was a fact and it should be integrated into the political process.
