PrintMilan to remember Holocaust deportees
Italy’s first Holocaust museum will likely be located in a Milan railway station used to deport Jews.
Officials in the northern Italian city said this week that they expect the memorial to be opened at the site of the notorious underground Platform 21 of the Central Rail Station in 2009.
Platform 21 was designed for cargo shipping, but during World War II hundreds of Italian Jews were loaded into trains there and transferred to death camps in Germany and Poland.
Italy is the only major European nation not to have a Holocaust memorial. Along with Milan, a memorial is also planned for Rome, Italian officials say.
