McCain cites Iran in speech

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) cited Iran’s potential nuclear threat and its sponsorship of terrorism in his speech accepting the Republican presidential nomination.

“Iran remains the chief state sponsor of terrorism, and is on the path to acquiring nuclear weapons,” McCain said Thursday, the last night of the Republican Party convention in St. Paul.

Three of McCain’s fellow senators also cited the threat in their speeches earlier in the evening: Sens. Mel Martinez (R-Fla.), Sam Brownback (R-Kan.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.).

Brownback led the crowd at Xcel Stadium in a chant mocking “Yes, we can!”, the trademark of the Democratic candidate, Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.)

“Are we going to keep nuclear weapons out of the hands of the Iranians?” Brownback said. “Yes, we will,” the crowd replied.

Israel did not come up in the evening’s proceedings, although it earned mentions on other days of the convention.
