Odessa marks Nazi massacre

Odessa officials, Holocaust survivors and other Ukrainian Jews marked the anniversary of the Odessa massacre.

The Oct. 23 ceremony at the local memorial to Holocaust victims remembered the more than 26,000 mainly Odessa Jews and prisoners of war of various nationalities and faiths killed at the site by the Nazis in October 1941.

The memorial dedicated to the city’s Nazi victims was built two years ago on the initiative of the Odessa Jewish community and the Association Ukraine-Israel.

Leaders of Odessa’s Jewish community say they are partnering with other organizations in plans to open a Holocaust museum next year.
