Nuke agency: Source of Syrian uranium ‘inconclusive’

JERUSALEM (JTA)—The head of the United Nation’s nuclear watchdog says the source of uranium found in Syria at the site of a suspected nuclear plant was "inconclusive."

Mohamed ElBaradei, the International Atomic Energy Agency’s director general, said Monday in Dubai that the traces of uranium found in soil samples from the site were not enough to prove that Syria was trying to develop an atomic weapon.

Israel bombed the site in September. U.S. intelligence said the site was a nuclear reactor that was near completion.

Syria has said the uranium traces were from the Israeli rockets that destroyed the site.

ElBaradei called on Israel and Syria to cooperate more fully with the IAEA’s investigation into Syria’s alleged secret nuclear program.
