PrintDutch to probe pro-Palestinian rallies
JERUSALEM (JTA) -- The Dutch justice minister will investigate allegations of anti-Semitism and incitement to hatred and violence at recent pro-Palestinian rallies in the Netherlands.
Ernst Hirsch Ballin made the announcement Wednesday, saying he would interview police in several cities and look into whether the public prosecutor took appropriate action when protesters broke the law, the German news agency DPA reported.
Police have been accused of failing to act against protesters during the demonstrations.
Pro-Palestinian rallies were held in Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam, Utrecht and other major Dutch cities. Many began spontaneously.
In Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht, protesters shouted the slogan "Hamas, Hamas, put the Jews to the gas," according to DPA.
On Monday, Dutch, Jewish and Muslim youths held a Shalom/Salaam/Peace rally in Amsterdam planned by Jewish youths calling for an immediate cease-fire between Israel and Hamas.
