Syria built missile facility on alleged reactor site

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Syria built a missile facility on the site of an alleged nuclear reactor, according to reports.

Syria's nuclear chief reportedly told the board of the International Atomic Energy Agency on Tuesday that either a control center or a launching pad was built on the site of what was believed to be a nascent nuclear reactor that was bombed by the Israeli Air Force in September 2007, The Associated Press reported. The AP cited unnamed diplomats.

The IAEA reported earlier this week that traces of uranium and graphite, both used in a nuclear reactor, were found at the site.

Syria denies that a nuclear reactor was being constructed on the site, saying only that the area was military in nature. It has refused to allow IAEA inspectors on the site following an initial inspection when the environmental samples were taken.
