Funding woes stall building of Tulane Hillel

NEW YORK (JTA) -- Funding problems have stalled the building of a new Hillel center at Tulane University.

The university has not been able to raise enough money to get the $6 million center off the ground, the president of the New Orleans school told JTA. Scott Cowen said that in the wake of the economic downturn, fund raising for the project had stalled at about $4.2 million.

“We were hoping to have the money and we would have broken ground by now,” he said.

Earlier Sunday, Cowen had addressed a plenary at a United Jewish Communities young leadership conference in New Orleans.
