Israeli teachers using Nakba educational kit

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Some Israeli teachers are using an educational kit on the Nakba without the approval of the Education Ministry.

The kit, which was developed by a nongovernmental organization for use in Jewish schools, has been distributed to more than 100 teachers, Ha'aretz reported Thursday.

It discusses the Nakba, or catastrophe, which is what the Palestinians call Israel's achievement of independence.

The curriculum includes history as well as literary and personal views of the Nakba, according to Ha'aretz.

"The purpose of our work is to include the Nakba in the educational system, from a viewpoint that the minute the pupils study about it, it will be possible to begin talking about a process of reconciliation," Amia Galili of the Zochrot organization told Ha'aretz.
