Sher to take over as first lady chief of staff

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- A White House official who has been handling Jewish affairs has been named the chief of staff for Michelle Obama.

Susan Sher, who had been associate counsel to the president and counsel to the first lady, will continue to work on Jewish outreach for the White House, according to a White House spokesperson. Danielle Borrin, a staffer in the vice president's office, also works on Jewish outreach for the administration.

"Susan Sher is a trusted adviser, longtime mentor and friend dating back to my work at the city of Chicago and later the University of Chicago," Michelle Obama said. "Since the beginning of this administration, Susan has served as a senior member of the East Wing and West Wing teams providing legal counsel, working as a member of the health care reform task force and leading Jewish outreach, and her transition to chief of staff will be seamless."

"Mrs. Obama and I have worked together for many years on issues that we both care deeply about and I appreciate the opportunity to be of greater service to her and this administration," Sher said.

Sher repleaces Jackie Norris, who was appointed senior adviser to the Corporation for National and Community Service.
