Hamas member dies in PA custody
JERUSALEM (JTA) -- A Hamas member died in the custody of Palestinian Authority security forces.
Hamas has accused the Palestinian Authority, which is controlled by the rival Fatah party, of torturing the man, held in a Hebron prison, to death, Reuters reported.
The Hamas member, 34, was detained on suspicion of money laundering, illegal possession of a gun and conspiracy to target Palestinian security forces, a PA spokesman told Reuters. Hamas said he was a charity worker.
The death, which comes on the heels of shootouts between PA security forces and Hamas members in the Palestinian city of Kalkilya, could complicate efforts to reconcile the two groups in a Palestinian unity government.
