PrintSoldier jailed for refusing West Bank service
JERUSALEM (JTA) -- An Israeli soldier was sentenced to military prison for refusing to take part in operations in the West Bank.
The combat soldier, 19, was sentenced to 30 days not for refusing to serve in the West Bank but for refusing to perform his duties, Ha'aretz reported Tuesday.
The unnamed soldier would not participate in his unit's West Bank operations after taking part in a March operation in the northern West Bank where, he says, Palestinian prisoners were abused.
He informed his superiors about his decision verbally and in writing about two months ago.
The army's spokesman told Ha'aretz that the soldier had been trying to leave his unit long before the March incident. He has refused other tasks to which he was reassigned, including kitchen duty.
