Iran recalls Azerbaijan envoy following Peres visit

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Iran recalled its ambassador to Azerbaijan following a visit to the country by Israeli President Shimon Peres, Iranian news agencies reported.

The envoy was recalled for consultations following the Peres visit Sunday to the former Soviet republic. The Iranian State News Agency also said that the Israeli ambassador in Baku made "threats" against Iran, Reuters reported.

Azerbaijan is Iran's neighbor to the northwest. Iranian officials had been pressuring Baku to cancel Peres' visit, the Jerusalem Post reported.

Israel and Azerbaijan signed several cooperation agreements during the visit, according to the Post.
