Lieberman calls for consul general’s resignation

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman called on Israel's consul general in Boston to resign after he criticized the government's handling of relations with the United States.

"Any official who is uncomfortable with government policies can resign," Lieberman said Monday during a meeting of Foreign Ministry officials.

Nadav Tamir sent a three-page memo addressed to the ministry titled "Melancholy thoughts on Israel-U.S. relations" in which he said Israel's handling of relations with the Obama administration was causing Israel "strategic damage." The memo, which was widely circulated to Foreign Ministry officials, was leaked last week by a yet undetermined source.

Tamir was summoned by the Foreign Ministry on Saturday. He is due to arrive soon in Israel.

Lieberman said Tamir should have voiced his concerns directly to his supervisors.

"I have never received a complaint I didn't answer," Lieberman said Monday. "The fact that the memo was sent to such a wide list of recipients raises the suspicion that it was meant to be leaked to the press."
