Print‘English Schindler’ to meet survivors
JERUSALEM (JTA) -- The "English Schindler" will meet some of the hundreds of Czechoslovakian Jewish children he saved from the Nazis.
Nicholas Winton helped to evacuate 669 children from Czechoslovakia in 1939 to Britain in what is known as the Czech Kindertransport. The meeting will mark the 70th anniversary of the evacuation.
A train carrying 22 of the people he saved and 150 other guests left Prague on Tuesday and will arrive Friday at Liverpool Street station in a re-creation of the Kindertransport. Winton will meet them there.
Winton, who turned 100 in May, was a London stock broker visiting a friend in Prague when he recruited a team to set up the trains to send the children to Britain. He then returned home and organized host families for the children.
