PrintAIPAC urges House to pass anti-Goldstone legislation
WASHINGTON (JTA) -- AIPAC urged members of the U.S. House of Representatives to support a nonbinding resolution that rejects the findings of the Goldstone report.
The American Israel Public Affairs Committee's letter sent Monday to House members calls swift approval of the bipartisan legislation “critical” as the U.N. General Assembly considers action on the Goldstone report this week.
It calls the report “part of an ongoing effort at the U.N. to single out Israel and to deny Israel the same rights accorded to other nations.”
The House measure, scheduled for consideration Tuesday, calls the report of the United Nations fact-finding mission on last winter's Gaza war “flawed and biased,” and urges President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton not to give it further legitimacy or attention.
U.S. Rep. Howard Berman (D-Calif.), chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, and U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.), its ranking Republican, sponsored the resolution.
It comes less than a month after the U.N. Human Rights Council passed a resolution to endorse Goldstone’s recommendations accusing Israel and Hamas of war crimes.
