Jerusalem protest targets fervently Orthodox

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Hundreds of Israelis protested in Jerusalem against violence and bullying by the fervently Orthodox community.

Their demonstration Saturday evening against weekly violent protests by the city's haredi groups came several hours after haredim in Jerusalem demonstrated for the third straight week in front of Intel's Jerusalem electronic chip factory. The latest haredi protest was much smaller and less violent than its predecessors.

A group of haredim on Saturday also protested the opening of a municipal parking lot near the Old City on the Jewish Sabbath to accommodate visitors to the city.

The protesters against fervently Orthodox hegemony in the city marched from Paris Square to Zion Square in Jerusalem's city center, carrying signs that read "Iran is here -- we're sick of Haredi violence," "Jerusalem will not fall," and "We are sick of (religious) coercion."
