PrintJordan makes arrest in attack on diplomats
JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Jordanian officials have arrested dozens of suspected Muslim terrorists in connection with an attempted bomb attack on Israeli diplomats.
No one was injured in the Jan. 14 attack, in which two remote-controlled bombs were detonated near the Allenby Bridge crossing just as a convoy of Israeli diplomats visiting Jordan passed. Four diplomats and two security guards were heading to Israel for the weekend from Amman, according to reports.
The Associated Press reported that most of the arrested are Salafists -- militants who seek to revive strict Muslim doctrine dating back to the prophet Muhammad.
Meanwhile, in Egypt, about 25 suspects, some found with explosives and rockets, were arrested for allegedly planning to bomb the tomb of a 19th century rabbi in January during the annual visit of hundreds of Jewish pilgrims, according to reports that surfaced Sunday. The arrests have taken place in recent weeks.
