Innovativeness earns Covenant Awards for 3 Jewish educators
(JTA) – Three Jewish educators have received 2011 Covenant Awards for excellence in Jewish education and innovation.
The recipients are Rabbi Eve Ben-Ora, Jewish educator at the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco; Amy Skopp Cooper, the director of Ramah Day Camp in Nyack, N.Y.; and Rabbi Shai Held, dean and chair in Jewish thought at Mechon Hadar in New York.
They were cited for their innovative approach to Jewish education, and their ability to inspire and empower others to infuse their own lives with Jewish values and knowledge.
“Their influence is enormous,” said Harlene Winnick Appelman, executive director of The Covenant Foundation.
Appelman noted that the recipients “work in arenas that are not only relevant and engaging, but also are the practical places where people congregate, interact, absorb ideas and become inspired.”
Each of the award winners will receive $36,000, along with $5,000 for their institution. Sixty other Jewish educators have received Convenant Awards since the program was created in 1991.
The Covenant Foundation, a program of the Crown Family Foundation and the Jewish Education Service of North America, honors outstanding Jewish educators and supports creative approaches to Jewish programming.
