(JTA) -- Republican presidential hopeful Ron Paul reportedly signed off on racially charged newsletters in the 1990s, despite denying his involvement.
Paul said recently that he was not involved in the writing of and did not read the "Ron Paul Survival Report" pamphlets produced in the 1990s as part of a marketing campaign for a company and non-profit organization that was intertwined with his political career, the Washington Post reported Saturday, citing three people with direct knowledge of his business.
According to the Post, the newsletters made derogatory and highly insulting statements about blacks and gays, and made anti-Semitic statements.
The newspaper's sources said Paul was deeply involved in Ron Paul & Associates, which produced the newsletters, and signed off on the articles.
The pamphlets came into the national spotlight during Paul's 2008 presidential bid.
“I never read that stuff. I was probably aware of it 10 years after it was written, and it’s been going on 20 years that people have pestered me about this,” he said last month during an interview with CNN.
Paul reportedly made a significant amount of money from the newsletters.
