Swedish gay magazine names rabbi ‘heterosexual of the year’

(JTA) -- A gay magazine in Sweden has given a local rabbi its “Heterosexual of the year” award.

Rabbi David Lazar received the award from the gay Swedish magazine QX at a gala last week. The rabbi of Stockholm’s Great Synagogue, the 54-year-old Lazar has initiated events aimed at gay Jews.

Before his post in Sweden, Lazar had worked as a rabbi In Israel with the Masorti movement, the Israeli affiliate of Conservative Judaism.

In Israel, Lazar stirred controversy within the Masorti movement by officiating at same-sex marriage ceremonies.

Lazar had previously been honored by a Tel Aviv gay community group.

“I could probably be in the Guiness Book of World Records,” Lazar told The Times of Israel. “I’m the only rabbi with a gay award on two continents.”
