JERUSALEM (JTA) — Two rockets from Gaza were fired Tuesday on southern Israel after one fired a day earlier broke nearly two weeks of quiet following a barrage earlier this month.
One of the rockets fired Tuesday toward the city of Sderot was intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system, according to the Israel Defense Forces. The second landed in an open area. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
A cease-fire went into effect between Israel and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, as well as other terrorist groups in Gaza, following the barrage of 450 rockets fired Nov. 12-14 on southern and central Israel. They came in response to the targeted killing of a senior Palestinian Islamic Jihad leader, Baha Abu al-Ata, who was responsible for past rocket attacks on Israel and was said to be planning imminent attacks.
Israel responded to the rocket attacks with airstrikes on Islamic Jihad terrorist infrastructure in Gaza.
