(JTA) — Israel’s Cabinet will vote Sunday on extending Israeli law over the Jordan Valley and all West Bank settlements.
The vote will come at the Cabinet’s regular meeting, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told reporters in Washington, D.C., following President Donald Trump’s announcement of some details of the long-awaited peace plan at the White House on Tuesday.
The plan would cede to Israel the Jordan Valley and parts of the West Bank while eventually giving the Palestinians a state in the Gaza Strip and parts of the West Bank, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Netanyahu said it was important to know that “the United States will be a safeguard against sanctions by the United Nations Security Council.”
U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman told reporters at the White House after the Trump announcement that Israel can “annex settlements at any time.” Friedman also said that “Israel should not wait at all for annexation of the settlements.”
