Posted in: Oh, Canada
I absolutely disagree with the statement that Canadians are anti-semitic. We are just more even handed than Americans. We also understand that supporting Israel right or wrong as the US does is foolish in the extreme. We will support Israel's right to exist as well as Palestinians right to their own nation. We also know that Canada's interests are not syonymous with Israel's unlike the US which is very badle mistaken in thinking their interests are the same as Israel's. What Canadians will not countenance for one second is the buying of legislative votes through Israeli lobbyists. We have seen the disaster that has created in the US and we don't want it or need it in Canada. Do you hear that B'nai Brith? No buying votes!
Posted in: Student outreach at AIPAC
As it is currently comprised AIPAC is illegitimate. It must be required to register as a foreign lobby. That would at least open up the eyes of America to its true purpose. As it stands and considering the US military brass's warning to the President that Israeli actions were putting US soldiers in danger, AIPAC's response shows a total disregard for the well being of American military personnel. That is not the proper actions of an American lobby group.
Posted in: Is Obama alienating Jewish voters?
If the President is not alienating the "Jews" than it's long past time that he did. I put "Jews" in quotes because it is not the correct term to use in this question. The correct term is Zionists. The majority of American followers of Judaism are strong American patriots as well. I don't believe that about American Zionists whether members of Judaism or Christianity. It has been many years since the national interests of Israel and America coincided. I can trace the parting of the ways in July 1967 when Israel tried to sink the USS Liberty. After that the division in interest widened. Today the American military brass made it official, Israeli activities are harming American servicemen in far away places. Now we will find out who is an American patriot and who isn't. When the Israeli firsters start their bleating because the President has lowered the boom on Israel, we will know.
Posted in: A message for Palestinians in the Israel-U.S. disagreement?
It is difficult to understand and doing so requires a lot of recent history lessons but Israel is not and has not been an ally of the US. It refused to execute a defence treaty when offered by the US. It destroyed an American ship, the USS Liberty in 1967, it spied on the US as in the Pollard case and many others, it has treated the US as a menial servant to be ordered and told what to do. It is not a friend or ally of America.
Posted in: Oren at Irvine
I simply don't understand why Irvine would invite the ambassador from a pariah state to speak at the university. He got exactly what he deserved. Do you think for one second that we all forget how the president of Iran was treated at Columbia? Well we haven't!
Posted in: Revelations of Iranian plant return nuclear threat to center stage
I always feel when I hear Israel complaining about Iran and it's alleged nuclear weapons program that hypocrisy knows no bounds. How dare a country that clandestinely acquired nuclear weapons criticize another country for wanting nuclear power? It actually makes me think that Israel is a dangerous, rogue nation that should be under severe international sanctions.
Posted in: Too much talk
Thank goodness that we have a president who is reluctant to shoot first and ask questions later. The talks with Iran should have occurred years ago as they would have resolved any problems by now. Bush simply wouldn't treat Iran as an international entity he would negotiate with. Too bad for Iran, Israel and the US. Now rather than open another war front in the Middle East we have a president who will treat with Iran diplomatically as civilized parties are wont to do. Finally!
Posted in: Op-Ed: There's something about Mary
Mary Robinson did a credible job at the Durban Conference. Certainly when both sides of a question are dissappointed with the result than she must have done something right. With all the problems in the world the bestowal of a medal to a special individual should not be taking anyone's time worrying about it.
Posted in: For some U.S. Jews, recession is catalyst for aliyah
I guess these emigrants were never truly American to begin with. I hope they aren't making a huge mistake confusing Zionism with Judaism. The article mentions that they are Jews but I don't consider Judaism and Zionism (return to Israel) as related at all. In fact I know that I have read many times that Israel is a secular state and not a religious one. In othe rwords I don't understand why Jews would want to practice their religion in Israel instead of America when both are secular states.

Ms. Thomas is one of the best and the fact that a lot of Zionists are upset by her comments should in no way besmirch her accomplishments. I say more power to her!
