Comment to Jerusalem Patriarch: Israel discriminates against Christians

Oy! So, what else is new? Would the patriarch prefer if Israelis (Jews, Muslims and Christians alike) were blown apart by suicide bombers? Where, oh where is the criticism of all the unbelievable discrimination throughout the Muslim and Arab world? Are they just the victims of low expectations?

To "thoroughly disgusted" - you are one of the many who i am sure were impressed by the "bravery" of Hamas and Hezbollah over the past few years. I am sure you would also prefer that Israel continue to put up with rockets or suicide bombers and sit passively. I suggest that you work on encouraging the Palestinians to build some sort of civil society instead of striving to attack Jews. Israel can be criticized as any other country can be, but the problem is when no other country is criticized and when Israel cannot defend themselves. Perhaps you can examine the stellar records of human rights by the Palestinians or the entire rest of the Arab and Muslim world.

It is not surprising that this came from Morocco. My mother was born in Morocco and emigrated from there in the early 50's. There is a long history of Jews being treated equally and as full citizens in Morocco (though not by the French, who treated Jews and Muslims equally badly).

These Christian leaders have every right to want to look out for their Palestinian Christian brethren. However, I always find it curious how they excuse everything the Islamic terrorists do and how they ignore the plight of Christians in the rest of the Middle East (Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, etc.). Let's be a little even-handed!

To Mr. Parkinson - you are correct on much of this, however you should realize that much of the anti-Zionism is disguised anti-Semitism for the simple reason that Israel is held to a much higher standard than any other country. the fact that you say you are ashamed of Israel's war in southern Lebanon in 2006 or Gaza in 2008 and make no comment about Hezbollah or Hamas, who instigated both wars, is symptomatic of the problems. I often comment back on these talk backs, but this is something we should all do. Thanks.

Oh, Qanni, do you reserve your outrage solely for Israel or do you label all the Muslims who kill other Muslims or who provide no rights to their minority populations or who have horrendous human rights records? In the future, I am sure you will be happy to live under a barrage of rocket attacks from Hamas or Hezbollah since they must be nothing to worry about. There is some, but minimal discrimination against non-Jews in Israel, but it is minor compared to discrimination against nearly everyone throughout the Arab and Muslim world. Just check out any report by an objective NGO Human Rights organization. They do not spare Israel, but the criticism of the Arab/Muslim world is much stronger because, well, the human rights violations are far more severe. Perhaps if Hamas stopped stockpiling weapons and shooting rockets, the blockade would stop. Egypt has tried to stop Hamas as well in Gaza because they see the dangers present. Stop being the victim and try, just try to build a civil society instead of using violence and blaming Israel!

I think all the European countries who eagerly criticize Israel at every turn should happily take this and other bad actors. That would show their "even-handed" bona fides.

You have to love boycotts of Israel as if she is the biggest violator of human rights. If groups such as this were to conduct boycotts of countries with real human rights violations, they'd have little oil since most of the major oil exporters are major human rights violators, but none of those get as much attention as attacking Israel. Why not boycott Venezualan or Saudi oil? Nah, that would be too difficult and would force people to think too much.

Tamar, besides being cruel, your argument carries no logic. If Jews have only one child, we will decimate ourselves in just a few generations. Why be so cruel to the Palestinians? Anyone would be devastated if they lost 29 members of their family. I would blame Hamas, but either way, they are looking to make themselves whole. They know suing Hamas will get them nowhere, so they look to solely blame Israel. Please, let's not stoop to the level of those who hate without thought.

The British are really pathetic. If they believe what they say, these folks should not use any product or medicine that is Israeli-designed or made, including Intel. Please, can they also look at atrocities across the Muslim world instead of just attacking Israel at every turn? That, however, would be too simple. I think much of Britain forgets that it was the British Mandate of Palestine that had control of this area until 1948! They had their chance between the wars to create all the countries they wanted.
