They were angry, resentful, sullen, and confused. Usually from poor rural villages. These were people the anthropologist Peter farb called "acculturated". Forcibly stripped of their identity, history and culture. Lost souls thrashing about in a society where they were strangers. In most cases they had been raised as strict Catholics, only to become alienated and rebellious. Jewish genes are extremely persistent, they resurface after many generations producing faces, bodies and behaviors that are obviously Jewish. Unfortunately, these people grow up in a culture knowing nothing of Jewishness, and trying to adapt their peculiarities to catholicism. I was dismayed at how anti-Israel the tone of the debate was. It was more like a diatribe rather than a debate.
