Every country has the kind of Jews it deserves. The Jews in England are a very prominent and useful element, receiving much better treatment than the Jews in the United States. These are the conclusions reached by Lord Birkenhead, formerly Lord Chancellor of England, who has returned here from a visit to the United States.
In an article published today in the Sunday “Times,” Lord Birkenhead pays high tribute to Lord Reading, the present British Viceroy of India.
“Lord Reading,” Lord Birkenhead states, “is the most romantic figure in the history of England. Having been born a Jew, he has always had the manly courage to accept the disadvantages which membership in the Jewish race entails.
“Great Britain deserves good Jews and it gets them. This, however, is not the case in America. Even Jewish millionaires are not accepted in very high society in America.”
Lord Birkenhead states that he visited America during the time when Lord Reading was the English Ambassador to the United States, and that he then witnessed how Reading had to combat and conquer the prejudice against Jews prevalent in Washington society.
“Lord Reading was the greatest Ambassador that England ever had, and is now proving to be a very successful Viceroy of India, during a critical time,” concluded the article.
