An official communication just issued says:
“The Ottoman Law of Patents and Designs, which is dated 1297 (1880) does not conform with the International Conventions regarding industrial property which have been concluded since the law was passed. It has been necessary, therefore, to replace the Ottoman Enactment in order that the law in Palestine may be in accord with that in European countries. The Ordince, which appears as a Bill in the Gazette of May 1st, is based upon the English Law of Patents and Designs which has been adopted in all the countries subject to British administration.
Provision is made in the law both for the grant of original patents in Palestine and also for the registration of patents granted in foreign countries. The period of protection of patents is sixteen years, and of designs five years, subject to provision for renewal of two further periods of five years.
“Since the Occupation it has not been possible to obtain the grant of an original patent in Palestine, but a Public Notice issued by the Military Administration authorized the registration in Palestine of patents obtained abroad in order that they might receive protection in Palestine. Provision is made in the Ordinance for preserving the rights obtained by such registration and also for preserving the rights of patents granted in the Ottoman Empire.”
