The result of the elections in France has caused a great excitement in Syria and Lebanon, according to reports received today by the Daily Express. The Moslem leaders of Syria expect a change in the French regime and consequently also in France’ attitude towards the independence of Syria. Negotiations have already been started by Syrian leaders with Caliph Hussein and his son, Emir Abdullah, the present ruler of Trannjordania, to both of whom the French have been opposed.
The leaders of the Christians in Lebanon are opposed to any change in the situation, fearing the withdrawal of the French troops from Syria.
At the same time the guerilla war on the northern border of Syria is still going on, and Turkish troops are threatening Aleppo and Alexandretta. New French reinforcements are expected at Beyrouth.
The paper further states that the leaders of the Palestinian Arabs hope that Palestine will be returned to the Turks in conjunction with the expected events in Asia Minor.
