Seventy-five representatives of Temple Sisterhoods are attending the annual meeting and conference of the New York State Federation of Temple Sisterhoods which opened last night in the auditorium of Temple Beth Emeth.
Mrs. Sallie Kubie Glaube, President of the State Federation, made a report in which she stated that 31 sisterhoods were in the federation, and that about 9,000 members were enrolled. She spoke of the work that is being done on New York’s east side and said that one of the things the federation hoped to accomplish was to get the name of every unaffiliated Jewish family in the State in order that a contact night be established.
The speakers included Nathan J. Miller, Chairman of the New York Executive Committee of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, and Dr. Nathan Krass, who discussed the topic: “Are the Jews the chosen people?”
In his address, Mr. Miller said that women active in religious work were erring in believing that they were aiding religion by holding lectures, teas, socials, musicales and charity events. If their work is to be a success in God’s eyes, it must be along religious lines mainly, he said. He urged the women “to bring the synagogue’s atmosphere into their own homes, and to fost a Jewish consciousness.”
